Fan Zhendong has finally won a gold medal in the Olympic Men’s Singles table tennis event. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, he fell short to his teammate Ma Long, winning silver as a result. In the final match for the Men’s Singles at the Paris Olympics, he beat Truls Moregard 4-1 in a highly competitive match that had fans on their feet. A 4-1 win may seem decisive, but every set was very close:
Game 1: 11 – 7 (Truls Moregard)
Game 2: 11 – 9 (Fan Zhendong)
Game 3: 11 – 9 (Fan Zhendong)
Game 4: 11 – 8 (Fan Zhendong)
Game 5: 11 – 8 (Fan Zhendong)
It was an important game for the Chinese table tennis player, as China had not lost a gold medal match since 2008. This victory was especially significant because his compatriot and World #1, Wang Chuqin, had already lost to Truls Moregard in Round 32. The match between Fan Zhendong and Truls Moregard was the first Chinese to non-Chinese gold medal match since 2004 – a testament to how the Chinese have dominated the sport for a very long time.

Congratulations Fan Zhendong for winning the Olympic Gold Medal. He was closed to losing it to Tomokazu Harimoto. Chinese table tennis players always have a good way of closing out close games.
