Contrary to what has been circulating on social media, Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng are not retiring yet. While they will no longer participate in ITTF-sanctioned tournaments, they will remain active in other competitions, such as the Chinese league.
The main reason for Fan Zhendong's decision is the fines imposed by the ITTF whenever a player misses an ITTF-sanctioned tournament.

ITTF Cup and Championship

I believe Olympics is an exception? Not quite sure.
