I watched this documentary and was surprised to learn that 80% of professional tennis players struggle to make money. Given tennis's international popularity, I often wonder how many professional table tennis players struggle to break even with their career earnings.

It's truly unfortunate. I think, with the exception of the Chinese, most professional table tennis players have to shell out personal money to compete in WTT and ITTF events. Aruna even said in one of his interviews that the registration fee for WTT has increased significantly, while the prize money has remained the same. Most of them I think survived through sponsorship and
racket deals.

elmercasinog,

Even Chinese table tennis players only receive 35% of their earnings. It was revealed in an interview with Li Na that China takes 65% of athletes' earnings. I would assume it's the same for table tennis players.
