Why do Chinese table tennis players ask for apology if they lost in the Olympics?

Liu Shuwen and Xu Xin asks for apology when they lost to Jun Mizutani and Mimo Ito in the mixed doubles gold medals match in Tokyo 2020. Liu Shuwen was crying while being interviewed asking for apology. 

Why do Chinese table tennis players ask for apology if they lost in the Olympics?

Table tennis is China's national sport and they have been dominating the Olympics since 1988. Now, I don't think they are demanded by their country to ask an apology if they lost. It's more like the shame they felt for themselves because they are expected to win. If I am in their shoe, I would be extremely  be sad and I would feel like I put my people down. I would shed tears too.
