Speed glue traditionally contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that enhanced the elasticity and speed of table tennis rubbers. When applied to the sponge of table tennis rubbers, speed glue caused them to expand and soften temporarily, increasing the "kick" effect and overall speed of the ball. It was popular among professional players until it was banned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in 2008 due to health and environmental concerns associated with VOCs. It provided significant speed and spin due to the increased elasticity and tackiness of the rubber during play.

Water-based glues are designed to be non-toxic and environmentally friendly, complying with ITTF regulations. These glues are used to attach table tennis rubbers to blades without altering the rubber's characteristics or performance during play.  Since the ban of speed glue, water-based glues have become the standard for attaching rubbers to blades in competitive play.
