There have always been doubles events since table tennis debuted in the Olympics in 1988. However, at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the doubles events were no longer part of the competition. Why was the table tennis doubles competition discontinued?

The reason why the doubles event was discontinued at the Olympics in 2008 because it was replaced with the team event which is more popular than the doubles.
If you look at this document/page that while the doubles event ended at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the team event debuted.
