Ma Long has already cemented his legacy as the greatest table tennis player of all time. He is the only male table tennis player to win a Grand Slam and held the World #1 Rankings for 5 years and 4 months—the longest by any table tennis player in the history of the sport.
On August 9, 2024, he made history by winning the men’s team event and clinching his 6th Olympic gold medal—the most gold medals obtained by a Chinese athlete in the Olympics. He surpassed Wu Minxia (Diving), Zou Kai (Gymnastics), and Chen Ruolin (Diving), who each won 5 Olympic gold medals. Over a span of 12 years, he won 2 gold medals in men’s singles (2016 and 2020) and 4 in men’s team (2012, 2016, 2020, 2024) at the Olympics. For this reason, Ma Long is arguably the greatest Chinese athlete to ever played in the Olympics.
Ma Long never lost a match in table tennis at the Olympics. He is called “The Dictator” because of his dominant playing style and his all-out offensive attacks.
