Biography

John Russel Misal is a professional Filipino table tennis player. He was born and raised in Davao, Philippines.

John Russel Misal played UAAP table tennis  in Season 80 where he become the most valuable player leading the National University to a championship in 2018. He is a 2-time SEA Games medalist having won Silver in  2021 and Bronze in 2023 along with Richard Gonzales in the doubles event. He also reached semi-finals in the Paris Olympics 2024 South East Asian qualifier held in Thailand.

Misal won bronze medal at the 2025 South East Asian Games Men’s Team Event  in Bangkok, Thailand.

Misal is a defensive player using a long pimples rubber in the backhand and regular rubber in the forehand. 

Misal has played with the best table tennis players in World including LIM Jonghoon (World #30), Izaack Quek, and  Ri Jong Sik (Olympics Silver Medalist).

John Russel Misal is a right-handed shakehand-grip defensive player. He uses long pimples on his backhand and plays well away from the table, employing a classic defensive chopping strategy. He sometimes switches the long pimples to his forehand when receiving serve, which often catches his opponent off guard.

John Russel Misal’s most notable wins include victories over over Wong Qi Shen (4-1) and Javen Choong (4-1), both of Malaysia, at the 2024 Southeast Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament for the Paris Olympics, held in Thailand.

At a doubles event, he and Richard Gonzales defeated Singapore, securing a silver medal for the Philippines at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games.
