Sweden is back on the world’s biggest table tennis stage after Truls Moregard defeated Hugo Calderano 4-2 in the Men’s Singles semi-finals. With the win, Moregard is guaranteed an Olympic silver medal, ending a 24-year medal drought.
Game 1: 12 – 10 (Truls Moregard)
Game 2: 16 – 14 (Truls Moregard)
Game 3: 11 – 7 (Hugo Calderano)
Game 4: 11 – 7 (Truls Moregard)
Game 5: 12 – 10 (Hugo Calderano)
Game 6: 11 – 8 (Truls Moregard)
Moregard will face Fan Zhendong in the Gold Medal match. The last time a Swedish table tennis player reached the finals in the Men’s Singles event was in the 2000 Sydney Olympics when Jan-Ove Waldner faced Kong Linghui.
Truls Moregard has had a remarkable Olympic run. In the Round of 32, he surprised the world by defeating the World’s #1 table tennis player, Wang Chuqin. Moregard uses a Cybershape table tennis racket, and with his unconventional playing style, he is capable of upsetting higher-seeded players. He is coached by Jörgen Persson, a former world champion.
The Men’s Singles gold medal match will take place on August 4 at 2:30 p.m. in Paris, France.
