This is such a great explanation by Ma Lin on how table tennis changed over the years. I put here the concise points he said:

1. Ball: Form 38 mm -> 40 mm -> 40+mm
2. Glue: Speed Glue -> Water-based
3. Scoring: 21-point -> 11-point
4. Rally Initiation: Backspin -> Topspin
5. Spin: More Aggresive Before
6. Rally: More power and duration
7. Playing Sylte: More Technical -> Big Strokes (Power Driven)

Changing the ball from 38 mm to 40+mm means the ball is slower and therefore longer duration on rallies which makes it more entertaining as Ma Lin puts it.
